How Weather Can Impact Driving Condition

- Client Reviews

Ontario is considered a continental climate, which means we have hot summers and cold winters.  Thus, we will see many different types of bad weather conditions which can create many hazards on our roadways.

In Canada, even something as minor as mild fog can delay our time of travel by a significant amount.  Of course, more severe conditions such as ice storms and severe thunderstorms can cause us to completely lose control of our vehicles, resulting in automobile accidents.

If you or a family member has been injured in an auto accident due to a negligent individual, the victim may be eligible to receive compensation for their losses and damages including; loss of wages, pain and suffering, medical expenses, and property damage.

Types of Bad Weather in Windsor

In general, most drivers try to avoid driving in potentially dangerous weather conditions such as blizzards, severe thunderstorms, and icy conditions, however sometimes it is simply unavoidable.  In these cases, we must proceed with extreme caution and practice defensive driving techniques in order to remain in control of our vehicles.

Some common types of bad weather in Windsor include:

  • Blizzards
  • Snow
  • Ice
  • Fog
  • Rain
  • Thunderstorms
  • Tornados
  • Hail
  • Heavy wind
  • Cloudiness

With a decrease in visibility and a diminished ability to handle or vehicles in some of these conditions, we must drive accordingly for each of these bad weather driving conditions.

Risks of Driving in Bad Weather

Depending on the season, we may see any of the above bad weather conditions. Thus, we must recognize the risks of driving in these conditions to better prepare ourselves and prevent accidents from occurring.

Some risks of driving in bad weather include:

  • Obstruction of Vision

Obstruction of vision is extremely common whenever adverse weather conditions may strike. Depending on the severity; we should slow our driving speed, activate our low beam headlights, and in severe cases, pull over to the side of the road.

  • Slippery Roads

In many instances, bad weather will affect our road conditions and create low tire traction.  Again, with slippery roads, it is advised to slow our driving speed, increase our following distance, and take longer to slow our vehicles when coming to a stop. Additionally, slowing our driving speed in rainy conditions will help us to avoid hydroplaning.

  • Loss of Control

It is often that drivers lose control due to bad weather conditions. If you lose control of your vehicle, try to slow your speed and keep your tires aimed at where you want to go.  There are additional techniques to help better prepare us for these situations provided by local defensive driving courses.

Our lawyers recommend that when severe weather conditions are present, drivers pull over to the side of the road, or wait until the roads have become safe to drive on once again.

Injuries Caused By Driving in Bad Weather

Statistics provided by Science Daily demonstrate that 24% of car accidents were due to ice, snow or rain in 2008.  Of these car accidents, there were likely injuries involved, as there are with nearly all accidents. Of course, the type of accident and speed of travel is also directly correlated with the type and severity of injury.

Some common injuries caused by driving in bad weather include:

If you are suffering from an injury due to any form of car accident, it is recommended to seek medical attention as soon as possible to prevent any further injuries from occurring.  Furthermore, these medical documents may be used by our lawyers to formulate a stronger case against a negligent individual who may have caused any losses and damages.
