In 2010 the Ontario Road Safety Annual Report specified that more than 215,000 reported collisions occurred, of which more than 44,000 caused injuries. The same report shows that more than 700 hospitalizations were due to head fractures and intracranial injuries.

Causes of TBI

Traumatic brain injuries could be non-penetrating and penetrating injuries and they are also often classified as mild, moderate, and severe injuries. Anyone who is involved in a car accident may experience all of these types of injuries.

Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury

Depending on the type of traumatic brain injury a person experiences, the symptoms may vary. For example, children suffering from TBI may be inconsolable, their eating or nursing habits may change, and they may lose the ability to pay attention.

Some mild symptoms adults may experience:

  • Memory or loss of concentration
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness for a few seconds or minutes
  • A state of being dazed or confused
  • Nausea
  • Sensory problems such as blurred vision or ringing in the ears

A mild traumatic brain injury could cause many or all of these symptoms, in some cases a person may be fatigued but also have difficulty sleeping. If a person has a more severe head injury they may feel:

  • Agitated or combative
  • Loss of consciousness for several minutes to hours
  • Slurred speech
  • Persistent headaches
  • Convulsions or seizures
  • Muscle weakness
  • One or both pupils may be dilated
  • Loss of coordination
  • Fluid drainage from the nose or ears

Neurological exams and computed tomography (CT) scans are commonly used to diagnose the type of injury sustained. If anyone is suffering from these symptoms they should seek medical attention immediately.

Preventing Traumatic Brain Injuries

The use of proper safety equipment can aid in preventing head injuries among those who play sports or work in hazardous fields. As car collisions are a primary source of head trauma, drivers and passengers should wear their seat belts, use child safety seats, and consider driving a vehicle that has airbags. Motorcycle riders and bicyclists should also always wear helmets to prevent injuries.
