Lacerations from Auto Accident

Most people will experience a cut or scrape at least once in their lifetime, however lacerations are much more serious type of cut. The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) defines a laceration as wound that is produced by the tearing of soft body tissue. A laceration is usually jagged and irregular, often contaminated with whatever caused the injury.

Lacerations are a common injury during motor vehicle accidents such as motorcycle collisions and car accidents. According to the Ontario Ministry of Device, there were more than 90 Canadians admitted to the hospital after a car collision for open wounds. Although the number may not seem high, overall these persons were in the hospital for approximately 695 to treat their injuries.

Lacerations are serious personal injuries that can lead to prolonged hospital stays and complications caused by serious infections.

If you or a loved one has suffered lacerations due to a serious car accident, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical expenses, lost wages, and more. Types of Lacerations

The skin is composed of three different layers known as the epidermis, dermis and subcutis. When an individual is cut it primarily only effects the epidermis, deeper cuts though such as a laceration affect all the lawyers of the skin as well as muscle, internal organs, and even bone.

There are different types of lacerations including:

Superficial: affects only the skin and there is no penetration into the blood vessels

Deep Laceration: affects all the layers of the skin

Clean Laceration: A laceration in which no dirt or other type of contamination is present

Complicated Laceration: Lacerations that affect underlying tissue such as muscles, tendons, nerves, organs, and so on.

A wound that may become infected is called a contaminated laceration, such infections could be caused by a dog bite, dirt, debris, and more. The quicker a laceration is treated the less likely it may become infected while being exposed to the environment at the time of the injury.

Causes of Lacerations

Those who work with sharp instruments such as those in the health care field or in the food industry are likely to suffer from a cut or laceration. When a person is involved in a car accident, there are a number of dangers within the vehicle that could lead to lacerations.

Some causes of lacerations include:

  • Broken Glass
  • Bent/Broken Vehicle Frame
  • Blunt Trauma

The trauma of a collision can cause the skin to tear easily. Aortic dissection is the tearing of the aortic walls, which is a major artery and the tear can actually grow leading to severe bleeding. According to the NLM aortic dissection happens in 2 out of every 10,000 people.

Treating of Lacerations

The most common symptom of a laceration is bleeding, swelling, and bruising. It is important that a person seek medical assistance right away so that the wound can be properly treated.

Lacerations are often treated with the following methods:

  • Wound Irrigation and cleaning Removes debris and excessive discharge, and decreases the possibility of infection
  • Laceration repair depending on how deep the laceration is, repair may be necessary including repairing damaged muscle and closing the skin with stitches
  • Pain medications lacerations can be very painful and often doctors will prescribe medication to ease the discomfort
