Since Windsor declared a COVID-19 emergency in March, businesses are closed and people are staying home, resulting in less vehicles on the roadways and even less reported crashes.
Auto insurance companies, however, continue to charge consumers with high premiums despite the Ontario government enabling insurers to provide driver rebates.
In a discussion with Windsor Star, firm founder and Windsor lawyer Greg Monforton believes that insurance companies are taking advantage of the current pandemic and making considerable profits while Windsor drivers are struggling with financial hardships.
Decline in Reported Crashes
According to the Windsor Police Service, traffic accidents have been cut nearly in half. There were approximately 300 crashes reported in the month of April – about a 50 percent reduction in comparison to last year’s figures.
It is no surprise to Monforton that car accidents have significantly decreased since many people living within the city and province are unable to work. Motorists should not be paying the same level of premiums if they are not commuting or using their vehicles and fewer insurance claims are being filed.
Rebates on Insurance Premiums
The Ontario government has left the decision up to auto insurance companies to decide whether consumers are afforded rebates, refunds or other special measures during this time.
A spokesperson for the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) expects about $600 million in savings to be offered by its member companies to consumers throughout Canada over the next couple of months. More than half of these relief efforts will be issued in Ontario and aside from adjusted premiums, these insurers are also offering consumers flexible payment options.
With over two decades of experience dealing with insurance companies, Monforton believes that while these relief efforts are considerable, it will not be equal to the profits still being made with significantly reduced claims. More has to be done to ensure that policy holders are not being taken advantage of.
