What Are Accident Benefits?

The standard auto insurance policy in Ontario provides you with benefits if you have been injured in an accident. Regulated under the Ontario Insurance Act, these additional benefits may be available to you, your spouse, and dependents.

Some key benefits available include:

Medical and rehabilitation benefits: may be used to pay for medical treatment, physical therapy, medication, housing alternatives, transportation, and more.

Attendant care benefits: Family members and other caretakers may eligible for compensation, these benefits will assist you in compensating them for their assistance.

Income replacement: these benefits will compensate you if you were unable to return to work and lost wages due to your injury, the benefits provide a maximum of $400 per week.

Visitation expenses: immediate family members who traveled to visit you may be reimbursed for travel expenses, parking, accommodations, and even meals.

In order to receive these benefits you must tell your insurance company within seven days of the occurrence of the accident. Your insurer should provide you with a benefits application packet which must be filed within 30 days of receiving the application forms, failing to do so could lead to ineligibility.
