Safe Riding Tips for Cyclists

- Client Reviews

Ontario’s picturesque landscape and cooler temperatures make it the perfect area for cycling enthusiasts to enjoy a long ride on their bicycle. Though riding is generally a relaxing pastime, the threat of a vehicle collision does exist. It is vital that cyclists stay aware of their location and maintain high visibility to avoid being injured while riding.

The following safe riding tips for cyclists can help combat the high number of riders who are involved in auto accidents annually. The Canadian Auto Association reported data from Transport Canada citing a yearly average of 7,500 injured cyclists, 18% of which were under the age of 16 and were killed from the accident.

Were you or someone you love injured in a bike vs. car crash? If so, you could be entitled to compensation that could assist with medical bills, hospital costs, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other related expenses that you incurred because of the accident.

The legal team of Greg Monforton & Partners believes the victims of bicycle accidents deserve fair and competent representation in a court of law. We will always fight for the MAXIMUM compensation due to our clients, and because we work on a contingency fee basis, you pay us nothing unless we win your case.

Safe Riding Tips for Cyclists

The most basic way to remain safe on Canadian roads and highways is to follow the law at all times, but there are other safe riding tips that can help keep cyclists alive in very dangerous situations.

Some of the most important things to remember when riding in Ontario are:

Inspect cycling equipment

Is your bike in good working order and roadworthy?

Check brakes

Pull on the brake levers to check their wear. Contact a bike shop for help fixing them if need be.

Check bikes tires

Is the tread good? Are there any holes in the tires?

Dress to be seen

Wear brightly colored or reflective clothing so cars will see you.

Check height of the bike

Make sure when sitting on the bike, the tips of your toes touch the ground. Too high and you will not be able to pedal and stop correctly; too low and the bike will be unbalanced.

Do not wear loose-fitting clothing

The proper cycling attire is tight but breathable, as loose-fitting clothing could get caught in gears and cause an accident.

Always wear a helmet

It is mandatory for children under 18 to wear a helmet in Ontario, but it is always wise no matter what age the rider.

Protect your eyes

Flying rocks, dirt, and other debris can easily blind a rider and cause them to crash or even create an accident with a vehicle. Similarly, eye protection is crucial in the event of an accident with a vehicle.

Know the road rules

Common sense may dictate to most riders how to behave, but when driving with cars it is even more important: always signal your intentions, ride with the flow of traffic, obey traffic signs and signals, and never assume you have the right of way, even though vehicles should yield to riders and pedestrians.
