A collision with a motor vehicle in downtown London has seriously injured a cyclist.
The collision occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on September 16 at the intersection of Dundas Street and Maitland Street. Emergency crews transported the cyclist, an adult man, to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
London Police reported the following day that the cyclist remained in critical condition. The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene.
The London Police Service Road Safety Section is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area between approximately 3:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. on September 16 and may have dashcam footage, residential surveillance footage or business security video to contact London Police.
Anyone with information can contact the London Police Service at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
Why Evidence Matters After a Serious Bicycle Collision
A police investigation may examine the position and movement of both the bicycle and vehicle, physical evidence from the roadway, available surveillance or dashcam footage, witness statements and other information from the scene.
For an injured cyclist and their family, a lawyer can also take steps to preserve and obtain evidence that may help determine how the collision occurred and whether another party’s negligence contributed to it.
This may include obtaining available video before it is overwritten, identifying and interviewing witnesses, reviewing police records and collision reconstruction evidence, examining the vehicles involved and documenting the cyclist’s injuries and resulting losses.
The fact that police have not laid charges does not necessarily determine whether an injured cyclist has grounds for a civil claim. Criminal or provincial offence proceedings and civil personal injury claims are separate legal matters with different purposes and legal standards.
What Compensation May Be Available to an Injured Cyclist in Ontario?
A cyclist injured in a collision with a motor vehicle may have access to Ontario’s accident benefits system even though they were not driving or occupying a vehicle when the crash occurred.
Medical, rehabilitation and attendant-care benefits remain mandatory under Ontario’s automobile insurance system. A cyclist may be eligible to receive accident benefits even though they were not driving or occupying a motor vehicle when the collision occurred.
Which insurer is responsible for the claim depends on the circumstances. For example, benefits may be available through the cyclist’s own automobile insurance policy, a policy under which they are otherwise insured, or, in some circumstances, the insurer of a vehicle involved in the collision.
Depending on the circumstances of the crash, an injured cyclist may also have grounds to pursue a civil claim against an at-fault driver or another responsible party.
A serious injury claim may address losses such as ongoing medical and rehabilitation expenses, lost income or diminished earning capacity, future care requirements, and pain and suffering, subject to the requirements and limitations of Ontario law.
Ontario’s 2026 Accident Benefit Changes Can Affect Cyclists
Medical, rehabilitation and attendant-care benefits remain mandatory. However, several benefits that were previously included in standard automobile insurance coverage – including income replacement, non-earner, caregiver, housekeeping and other benefits – are now optional.
These changes can be particularly important for cyclists and pedestrians who are seriously injured in collisions involving motor vehicles.
The benefits available after a collision can depend on whether the injured person has their own automobile insurance policy, is covered under another person’s policy and what optional coverage was purchased.
For someone facing life-changing injuries, determining what insurance coverage is available and whether there may also be a claim against an at-fault party can therefore be an important part of the legal process.
How Can a Lawyer Help After a Serious Bicycle Accident?
The days and weeks following a serious bicycle collision can be overwhelming for an injured person and their family. At the same time, important evidence can disappear and insurance and legal issues may need to be addressed.
A personal injury lawyer can investigate the collision, help preserve important evidence, identify potentially responsible parties, review available insurance coverage and accident benefits, and assess whether there are grounds for a civil claim.
For someone hospitalized with serious injuries, a lawyer can also deal with insurers and other parties while the injured person and their family remain focused on medical care and recovery.
