There was a fatal car accident yesterday on Highway 401 close to Putnam Road. The crash happened just before 2 p.m. and involved two vehicles, one of which rolled over into a ditch. The driver inside that vehicle died at the scene.

Two other people who were injured in the crash went to hospital, but they did not have life-threatening injuries.

Authorities closed the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Thames Centre for several hours. The westbound lanes were reopened a little after 7 p.m. While the road was closed, traffic was redirected to Culloden Line so the accident could be investigated.

Traffic in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 slowed down due to the westbound lane closures. Police asked drivers in the eastbound lanes to use caution.

If you have any information about the accident, including dash camera footage, you can contact Middlesex OPP (1-888-310-1122). OPP will provide more updates as they become available.

Constable Jeff Hare posted a video to Twitter reminding drivers to be safe.
