Driver Charged in Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Accident

orange motorcycle accidentAmherstburg police have charged a Harrow man with fleeing the scene of a Sept. 16 crash that seriously injured the driver and passenger of a motorcycle who were left lying in the road.

The 23-year-old man was arrested Monday in Windsor and was charged with one count of failing to stop at the accident scene involving bodily harm and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

The victims, who are being represented by Greg Monforton & Partners lawyer Jennifer Bezaire, were relieved to hear the news, yet noted that it is only one less thing to have to worry about. Bezaire is representing the couple in a lawsuit against the driver.

The accident caused the 26-year-old husband to suffer broken vertebrae, a broken arm and a large gash on his side. His 27-year-old wife remains in critical condition at Windsor Regional Hospital’s Ouellette campus with severe injuries to her head and upper body. The husband reported that her condition continues to slowly improve and that she was moved out of intensive care last week.

The difficult thing is, as a motorcyclist, you can do everything right and still be the victim…”     – Jennifer Bezaire

Bezaire noted that the couple and their seven-year-old daughter face a long and costly recovery period.

According to police reports on the accident, the now-charged driver was traveling in a Saab 93 northbound in the southbound lanes of Howard Avenue when he collided with the motorcycle between Alma Street and County Road 18.

The two motorcyclists were thrown from the vehicle as the Saab driver sped off. The husband was thrown to the shoulder of the road, but his wife lay seriously injured in the middle of the road.

Investigators noted that it was helpful that the suspect drove a Saab 93 instead of a more common vehicle. They are still seeking witnesses of the accident who have more information about what happened. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 519-736-8559 or Crime Stoppers.
