Tragic Pedestrian Collision in Essex County Under Investigation

Police Car Lights at night

A 19-year-old woman was fatally struck early Sunday by a vehicle driven by an Ontario Provincial Police officer in Essex County. The tragic incident has prompted a thorough investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The collision occurred Sunday morning at approximately 4:25 a.m. on County Road 20 near Iler Road in Harrow, within the Town of Essex.

An Emergency Medical Services (EMS) unit transported the 19-year-old to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. According to an email statement released by an SIU spokesperson, “the officer did not appear to be en route to a call for service” at the time of the collision.

SIU Has Invoked Its Mandate and Begun an Investigation

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate to investigate this fatal collision. The SIU is an independent civilian agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police officers that have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

According to a news report, two investigators, two forensic investigators, and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case. These specialists will work to piece together the exact circumstances surrounding the collision and determine what occurred in those early morning hours.

Ontario Provincial Police are unable to provide any further information about the incident whilst the investigation remains ongoing. This protocol ensures the independence and integrity of the investigative process.

SIU Is Seeking Information and Witnesses

The Special Investigations Unit is urging anyone who may have information about this collision to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with individuals who may have witnessed the incident or who possess video footage or photographs from the area at the time.

Members of the public with relevant information can contact the lead investigator by telephone at 1-800-787-8529 or submit information online through the SIU’s website. Even seemingly minor details could provide crucial insight to the full circumstances of this tragedy.
