Four people, including three young children, were hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash southeast of Chatham on Thursday afternoon. The collision happened on Horton Line at Lagoon Road just after 12 p.m. and left the roadway closed for several hours as police investigated.
What We Know So Far
The vehicle was driven by a 33-year-old Chatham woman, who had three children with her – a five-year-old girl, a three-year-old girl, and a four-month-old boy – when it left the road. The two girls were treated at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance before being transferred to London Health Sciences Centre, while the driver and infant remain under care locally. All four are in stable condition. Police are asking anyone with dash-cam footage or information to contact Constable Joel Rehill or the traffic management office.
Child Passenger Safety: Quick Checks Every Trip
Proper restraint use greatly reduces injury risk for babies and young children in a crash. Before you drive:
- Rear-facing for infants: Use a rear-facing seat until your child reaches the seat’s height or weight limit.
- Snug harness: Chest clip at armpit level. No bulky coats under straps.
- Seat angle: Follow the seat’s level indicator so the infant’s airway stays open.
- Install once, check twice: The seat should not move more than 2.5 cm at the belt path.
- Graduation rules: Move to forward-facing with tether only when your child meets the seat’s stated limits.
- Booster next: Use a booster until the seat belt fits the child’s shoulder and lap correctly.
