CALL 24/7Greg Monforton and Jaclyn Habas thoroughly enjoyed spending an afternoon with the children at Camp Brombal last week. This event is an annual four-day summer camp for underprivileged children hosted by Windsor Police Service.
At a time when many summer camps are just too costly for families, Camp Brombal gives local children a unique opportunity to experience it for themselves!
Windsor Community Services Officer Cealia Gagnon explained to the Windsor Star that the opportunity is extended to children participating in the values, influences, and peers (VIP) program. However, kids in the program cannot just sign up.
To be considered for Camp Brombal, each child must first write a letter saying why they want to go and why they believe they should be chosen to attend.
Children attending the camp engage with kids from other schools, building new relationships outside of their own local areas. They also learn new skills, like canoeing, swimming, and archery.
While attending the camp is pretty exciting, there is one more surprise! Each camper comes away with a new bike, a helmet, a backpack full of supplies, and some memorable moments to share with their families and friends!
Police officers are the counsellors and leaders, giving campers the ability to see them in a less intimidating way. Throughout the four days of camp, these children interact with officers from various Windsor police units, including the canine and tactical team from Emergency Response Services.
Gagnon says, “I guess the key thing is for them to feel comfortable hanging around with us outside of the uniform knowing we are real people too and we just want to make sure they are having a really good time.”
This year, Greg Monforton & Partners was pleased to purchase helmets for the camp, and Greg and Jaclyn loved being able to meet the kids and hand out helmets in person!
