Greg Monforton & Partners is proud to announce that Myla Picco, one of the students in our Student Articling Program, has been recognized by the Leadership Windsor/Essex 40 Leaders Under 40 Awards.
For the awards, the leadership program recognizes 40 people in Windsor-Essex County who are under 40 years of age and have demonstrated a commitment to improving the region through community service or other goodwill activities.
The 40 recipients of these awards were chosen from more than 150 nominations. Candidates can self-nominate or be nominated by someone from the community. Anyone who was under the age of 40 as of Jan. 1, 2018 was eligible for consideration.
The award winners were chosen based on three selection criteria:
- Length and degree of service to Windsor-Essex County
- How their leadership and/or personal actions have had a meaningful impact on the community
- How they have inspired others with their leadership and advocacy on important issues in the community
Myla Picco’s Record of Community Service
Myla Picco has a long history of service to the community. She organized her first fundraiser when she was in the fifth grade. When she was in high school and an undergraduate in college, she volunteered with the Downton Mission Out of the Cold Program, Coldest Night of the Year Walk, cancer fundraising initiative, Transition to Betterness and the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul Community CleanUp.
In her first year of law school, Picco volunteered for Pro Bono Students Canada’s refugee project, writing humanitarian aid and compassionate grounds applications for refugees living in Windsor.
In her second year of law school, Picco became involved with the Family Law Project, the flagship project of Pro Bono Students Canada. This project allows students to work with lawyers to help unrepresented litigants in the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice.
In the Fall of 2016, Picco received an ATHENA Leadership Award for community involvement, academic excellence, leadership potential and inspiration to women.
Picco, who will be called to the bar in the next few months, is currently one of two students in our firm’s Student Articling Program, which provides students hands-on exposure to the practise of law, including things like:
- Mentoring from our personal injury lawyers
- Experience drafting pleadings and other legal filings
- Involvement in trail preparation
- Extensive interaction with clients
The 40 Leaders Under 40 Awards will be presented on Wednesday, March 28 at Caesars Windsor Augustus Ballroom in Windsor Ontario. You can purchase tickets to the event online and must RSVP by March 22, 2018.
Congratulations to Myla Picco on receiving this award for her commitment to the community.
