Forty-five years ago, two young lawyers started a law firm right after being called to the Bar in Ontario. They had a strong belief then, as they do now: that all injured individuals deserve access to legal help.
At Greg Monforton & Partners, we proudly celebrate this remarkable milestone and the privilege of serving families in Windsor Essex and across Ontario.
Serving Our Community Is a Privilege
When Greg Monforton & Brad Robitaille opened the doors of Greg Monforton & Partners in 1981, they had one clear, shared vision. That vision was to provide legal representation to those who could not afford to hire lawyers. We do not represent insurance companies or corporations — we help only real people who have been injured through no fault of their own.
During the last four-and-a-half decades, we have had the privilege of helping families through some of their hardest moments. We have witnessed and participated in initiatives that created positive change in the legal industry — in impactful ways that matter to this community. We have also been fortunate enough to build roots in a community that, to us, are not just professional, but deeply personal.
Getting the Word Out: Injured People Have Legal Rights
In the early days, Ontario lawyers were not allowed to advertise their services. They couldn’t tell the public what they did or what they charged. They couldn’t even let people know that legal help was available if they were injured. That left a lot of families in the dark.
When the Law Society of Upper Canada lifted its advertising restrictions in 1987, Greg Monforton & Partners made history, becoming the first law firm in Ontario to advertise on television. That one decision helped them reach people who needed their help but didn’t know where to find it — or if they could afford it.
45 Years. One Side of the Courtroom
Today our focus has not changed; every lawyer at Greg Monforton & Partners works exclusively for the person who was hurt. We never advocate for the insurance company on the other side. Since 1981, our firm has represented thousands of individuals and families in Windsor, collectively recovering more than $1 billion in compensation for our clients.
In Their Own Words
Greg Monforton, Co-Founding Partner
Greg is widely regarded as one of Canada’s leading advocates for catastrophically injured people. Over a career that spans four-plus decades, he has built a reputation that reflects his skill in the courtroom and his dedication to this community.
Here are a few of his achievements:
- Certified Specialist in Civil Litigation, Law Society of Ontario — a distinction held by fewer than 2% of all Ontario lawyers.
- Named to Best Lawyers in Canada every year since 2006.
- Past President, Ontario Trial Lawyers Association
- Author of You and the Law — a weekly legal column in the Windsor Star for more than a decade
- Guest lecturer and Moot Court Judge, University of Windsor Faculty of Law
- Advocate for reform of Ontario’s automobile insurance laws on behalf of injured victims

For Greg, the work has always extended beyond the courtroom and into the community he calls home. Reflecting on those early days and what has sustained the firm, Greg said:
“Forty-five years ago, I couldn’t have imagined where our firm would go. I just knew that we started it for real people; for those who fell through the cracks without knowing legal help was available. We built this practice on the belief that everyone deserves strong representation when they get hurt through no fault of their own. That belief is just as true today as it was in 1981.”
Brad Robitaille, Co-Founding Partner
Brad’s commitment as a lawyer has focused on Personal Injury and Mass Torts. He fought for people facing complex and high-stake legal battles. Away from the firm, he has served this community in ways that reflect the kind of person he is:
- Past President, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Windsor
- Past Member, Board of Directors, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Canada
- Board of Directors, Children’s Aid Society of Essex County
- Board of Directors, Brentwood Recovery Home
- Guest lecturer, University of Windsor Faculty of Law and Faculty of Business, and St. Clair College
Since 2008 Brad has also been a Founding Partner and Managing Partner of Tobacco Recovery Lawyers LLP, an international limited liability law partnership. This partnership was assembled for the purpose of fighting Big Tobacco on behalf of provinces and territories, to recover health care costs related to the treatment of smoking-related illness. In 2025 this litigation resulted in one of the largest resolutions of its kind in Canada.

Brad shared what Greg Monforton & Partners means to him:
“The cases that matter most are never the easy ones. They’re the ones where the odds feel impossible — where the other side has more resources, more power, and more time. That’s exactly where I want to be. Because someone must stand up for people who can’t do it on their own. That’s what this firm has always stood for — and why I’m so proud to be a part of it.”
Investing in the Future of Our Firm
In 2013, Joanna Sweet joined Greg Monforton & Partners as an associate lawyer, but she had roots here long before then. Joanna grew up in Essex County. She earned her law degree from the University of Windsor and later returned there to teach Constitutional Law and Auto Insurance Law.
In 2023 — just a decade later — Joanna became managing partner of Greg Monforton & Partners, and it is well deserved.
As a lawyer who is dedicated to legal excellence and advocating for the injured, here are a few of her most recent achievements:
- Vice-President, Ontario Trial Lawyers Association — elected President for the 2027-2028 term.
- Vocal advocate for the reform of Ontario’s Licence Appeal Tribunal on behalf of injured accident victims.
- Recipient, 2025 Windsor Law Alumni Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Faculty of Law.
- In 2024, Joanna received Windsor Law’s Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Windsor Law in Memory of John Mountain ’86.

Joanna shared her thoughts on what this milestone and the firm’s future means to her:
“I grew up in Essex County. I went to Windsor Law. I came back here to practice because this community is home — and because the work this firm does matters deeply to me. Greg and Brad built something remarkable. And it is an honour and privilege to lead our firm into the next generation of lawyers who will make a difference for real people.”
Thank You, Windsor Essex
