A two-car crash left one woman dead Friday afternoon when she swerved out of her lane and slammed head-on into another vehicle.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on County Road 46, right in front of Tilbury Golf Club. Denise Pinsonneault was working in the golf course snack shack when she heard what sounded like a big crunch.

As soon as I heard it, I knew it was a car accident, said Pinsonneault.  I heard it, it didn't sound good. I looked and it was even worse. I couldn't believe how the roof was pushed up like that.

Essex County OPP shut down County Road 46 between Richardson Side Road and Kent Road 1. Police said around 4:30 p.m. it would remain closed for several hours.

Police said a Dodge Neon was heading east on County Road 46 when it went out of control and swerved across the road and into the path of a Ford Mustang.

The cars ended up in a ditch across the road from the golf club with their front ends crumpled into each other. The roof of the Neon was also peeled back.

The driver of the Neon, a woman in her early 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police hadn't notified her next of kin Friday and didn't released her name.

The man and woman in the Mustang were taken to hospital in Chatham with non-life threatening injuries. Pinsonneault said the man who had been driving the Mustang got out of the car after the crash and was walking around.

When she heard the explosive crash, Pinsonneault said she ran next door to the pro shop and yelled from someone to call 911. One of the golfers who saw the crash ran over to help.
